$3.25 Special Sub at Tung Hing Bakery

The deli counter

Stephanie here,

As you all know, one of my weaknesses are Vietnamese Subs. For those of you who don’t know, a Vietnamese Sub is a Vietnamese sandwich consisting of a french baguette, pickled daikon, carrots and cucumber, various Vietnamese deli meats, mayo butter, Maggi Sauce, Vietnamese pate and cilantro. Part of the reason why I love Vietnamese subs is that they are very cheap and are very refreshing to eat. The creaminess of the mayo butter, the saltiness of the deli

meats, the tang from pickled vegetables, the freshness of the cilantro and of course the crunchy outside, soft inside of the french baguette all come together in a killer taste/texure/flavour combination.

One of my favourite Viet Sub places is Tung Hing Bakery on Kingsway.  There are a lot Vietnamese sub places along Kingsway in East Vancouver, but I think Tung Hing is one of the more famous ones.  What makes this Viet Sub exceptional is the french baguette that they make. It’s very crispy and crunchy on the outside and super soft on the inside.  As noted in their name, Tung Hing is also a bakery so you can buy egg tarts, BBQ pork buns, and various other Asian bakery treats.

They offer meatball sub, special sub, and lemongrass chicken all for

around $3. What’s interesting about this place is that they make the sandwich right in front of you.

At Tung Hing, their special sub is my hands down favourite. Everything in the baguette is just right. The pickled vegetables are the just the right tangyness, there is enough mayo butter and the meats are quite good. They are not skimpy on their filling, and actually their subs are quite long.

Just to try out the bakery, I also got the egg tart. The egg tart was very good! It

was flaky and the custard was not too sweet.

My friend also got the cheesecake. I didn’t try it, but she said it was ‘mmm … good’.

Overall, I think Tung Hing is one of the best Vietnamese Sub places in East Vancouver. It’s a good thing I don’t live close to it or else I would eat there everyday.
